A little known method often over looked by most Adsense webmaster to increase the relevancy of AdSense ads on your website site without modifying your content visually is by forcing the AdSense Bot to focus on or ignoring certain sections of your content. This is called “Section Targeting.”
Section Targeting allows you to suggest to the Google Adsense Bot sections of your text and HTML content you’d like Google to emphasize or downplay when matching ads to your site’s content. By providing Google with your suggestions, you can assist them in improving your ad targeting. Although implementation is easy, I recommend that only those familiar with HTML attempt to implement Section Targeting.
When Section Targeting is implemented on your web pages it will look like this:
<!– google_ad_section_start –>
The content you want the Google Adsense Bot to take notice of in here!
<!– google_ad_section_end –>
You can also designate sections of your content you don’t want the Google Bot to take notice of.
<!– google_ad_section_start(weight=ignore) –>
You would put this Section Targeting code above the content you want Google to ignore, for example:
- Navigation
- Footer
- Header
- Images
- Forms
You can use Section Targeting to make suggestions about as many sections of a page as you like. However, please be aware that we can’t guarantee results, and that it may take up to 2 weeks before our crawlers take into account any changes you’ve made to your site.
In order to properly implement this feature, you’ll need to include a significant amount of content within the Section Targeting tags. Including insufficient content may result in less relevant ads or PSAs. In addition, please keep in mind that this feature should only be used to emphasize significant sections of your site’s relevant content. It is against the Google Adsense policies to manipulate the ad targeting to result in ads that are not relevant to the content of your pages.
So to help get the most relevant ads on your website try Section Targeting.
If you are like me and use Wordpress, you can make this sometimes tedious job easier by using a plugin. I have found a Section Targeting Plugin that works a dream and can be implemented into your Wordpress blog very easily.
Once you have activated the plugin, look for the Section Targeting link in the sidebar. Here you will be able to chose whether you want the plugin to do the section wrapping for you, or you can chose whether you want the plugin to add an Add Section Targeting button to your post/page editor. I selected the “Add a Section Targeting button” option.
Then when you write a post or page you will be able to use the button to wrap your content.
You will find the Add Section Targeting Plugin in our resources page: Section Targeting Wordpress Plugin
