Every day in my email inbox I get asked “how do I make money with a website?” And I try to answer that question as best I can each and everytime, so I thought I would write a post on the subject.
Making money with a website comes down to, what sort of website you have. Many people make money from websites that are extension of their offline business, were as others develop websites to profit from money making opportunities online.
Websites that make money by selling products or sevices from an offline business
These websites are an online extension of their offline business and usually an online brochure, promoting products and services of their offline business. These website owners are not looking for online opportunities to market and sell, they are looking for techniques to attract more traffic to their sites.
These sites benefit from search engine optimization, attracting free search traffic. Per per click advertising also plays a very important part of a great online marketing strategy. So learning new ways to make money online is not what these websites owners need or want.
Websites that make money by selling products or sevices from other online business
Most of us are in this category and by far the easiest and most profitable niche to be in.
Starting an online business can be done by anyone. It’s cheap and these days with low cost applications coming out everyday, anyone can start and profit from a successful online business for no more than a few hundred dollars.
Benefits of an online business over an online business
- No need to rent or buy a physical shop or office.
- No need to buy stock.
- No need to buy insurance.
- No need to employ sales staff.
- No need to go to work.
These are just a few of the benefits of starting and operating an online business. But just like an offline business there are risks in operating an online business
- The bucks stops with you.
- The amount of money you make stops with you.
- The development of you online business is your responsibility.
- You can’t blame anyone else if your business fails.
But making money online with a website is one of the most exciting businesses I know. Waking up every morning, going online and checking how much your earnt the night before while you were sleeping is an exciting thing and depending on how much earnt can govern what sort of day you are going to have.
How do I make money with a website?
I have a number of ways of making money online.
- I use Google Adsense which makes up around 70% of my online income. Google provides you with code you add to your websites and then when someone clicks on an ad that Google displays, you get money. Can’t be any easier than that.
- 15% of my online income is through Clickbank. Clickbank have 1000’s of digital products for cat breeding ebooks to Internet Marketing software. No website owner who wants to make money online should ignore Clickbank.
- The other 15% of my online income comes from selling digital products I have made myself. This is an area I have just got into and will probably become more important in 2009.
The most important tip I could give you now? Stick to Google Adsense and Clickbank. Don’y worry too much about making you own digital products yet. Wait till you have a regular income and have a few $1000 spare to gamble on the development of a products.

Myles we aussiecan do it too! Why should the yanks have it all LOL. We all make money differently, however I am slowly building my list and will change the amount I earn from affiliates over time.

I’m suprise that 70% of you income is Adsense as my income is the complte opposite to you 70% Affiliate/Domain Sales 30% Adsense.

So very true! I write pretty much everyday for my blogs and I love doing it. But if you have a skill writing and a passion for a particular niche, writing articles can be a very profitable way to make money online.
If your forte is writing, then you could bid for writing articles for blogs and there are many such jobs available. Once you are a regular with some of the blog owners you can write for them almost on a daily basis and never have shortage of work.
